Does CrossFit work?
We'll let our members answer that...
To all my coaches at CrossFit Elevation, I want to thank you for your support and motivation. Before I began CrossFit my life was lacking some serious luster. I was at my heaviest weight and accepting my body image was a daily struggle. My core group of friends from college felt more like acquaintances. I was stuck in a job that I truly hated, and I had just ended a two-year relationship. I felt as if I was just "going through the motions," and I had never felt so bored and unhappy.
For the majority of my life, health and fitness had always been a priority for me. However during my college years health & fitness took a back seat, while booze, bars, and parties took the steering wheel.
After most breakups people usually stop to reflect and dwell in the past. As I reflected on my past, I realized I couldn't recall the last time I had done something positive and truly beneficial for myself. I needed a challenge in my life, something to focus my energy towards and place purpose and motivation back into my daily routine. As a means to revamp & revitalize my lifestyle, I began to research CrossFit gyms in the area. When I met with Matt for my baseline evaluation, he immediately made me feel at ease and comfortable. He was thorough and patient with his explanations and skill modifications. After visiting other gyms I knew I had found the right one for me! Shortly after I joined Elevation I began to research the “Paleo Diet.” I figured if I was going to dedicate my time and money towards fitness, I should follow through completely and fuel my body with healthy nutrients as well. I told myself I would start with a “30 day challenge.” My 30-day challenge turned into 60 days, then 90 days, and finally into a lifelong challenge. I was eating healthy, losing weight, and growing stronger every day! Now 3 months later I love the way I look and feel, I actually shower with the lights on! I have a new job that that prompts me with challenges everyday, but more importantly I have a job that I absolutely love. My friends and I make more of an effort to stay in touch, but I’ve also been able to meet and make new friends through Elevation. I’ve learned to love myself again and I’ve found the luster that my life had been lacking. The most rewarding part of it all is that the results are not immediate, but instead dispersed out gradually and continuously. It keeps me motivated & driven when I can look back and see how far I've come.
So, thank you CrossFit Elevation! You have introduced me to a whole new happier, healthier, and rewarding lifestyle. I believe it goes without saying, but what the hell: YOU GUYS ROCK!!!
I participated in CrossFit Elevation's first 60-Day Challenge built around body recomposition, improving energy level, and improving physical performance. Here are some before and after photos, showing my results in 60 days:
I measured and weighed myself at the beginning of training and again after the 60 days.
- Before – August, 25th, 2011 - Weight: 214 lbs, Body Fat %: 29% Measurements: Chest: 42 ¾”, Arms: 13 ¾”, Waist: 42”, Legs: 23 ¾”
- After – October 27th, 2011 - Weight: 200 lbs, Body Fat %: 18%, Measurements: Chest: 42”, Arms: 13 ½”, Waist: 38”, Legs: 22 ¼”
Benchmark “Cindy” WOD Results:

- October 27th, 2011 = 14 rounds + 5 pull ups + 1 push up
I love CrossFit and the CrossFit Elevation community who have become like family. In the past I've done 24 Hour Fitness and tried P90X at home only to see minimal results that I ultimately never stuck with. It wasn't until I began CrossFit that I finally found something that clicked for me and I've been at it for over 2 excellent years. I'm the most fit I've ever been, more mentally aware, positive, and happy. I'm proud of myself and thankful for the amazing coaches at CrossFit Elevation for their commitment to excellence.
Can't imagine my life without you guys, and I don't want to.
The only testimonial I could have written 7 months ago was about the exercise I got walking to the snack table from my desk at work. That was only if I was feeling adventurous because I would usually just scoot over in my wheelie chair. Yep, I was that girl.
I got started at CrossFit Elevation because my friend Laura Glen expressed her love for it. She knew I was at a low point in my life and being a great best friend, she wanted to help me get out of it. It took some convincing, but I promised to give it a fair shake. I came in for my baseline, finished it in a respectable time, and then almost vomited as I walked to my car. Despite that, I came back. It hurt, it was hard, and I hated it. But I came back. Again, and again, and again.
At some point in that process, I realized it hurt, it was hard, and I liked it. I was coming as often as my hectic work schedule allowed and it was a part of my week I really looked forward to. I liked all the people in my classes and had a lot of fun with them.
Then we started the Whole Life Challenge. I made the commitment to myself and to the CFE community that, in retrospect, I wish I had made when I started. I started coming three or more times a week. I started eating right. I showed up to the non-workout events (yes, we do those too!). I put in the work outside the gym working on mobility and active recovery so that I could do my best in the gym. I actively worked to engage in the Elevation community. I committed to every workout and I committed to being better every day. My athletic performance increased and my body completely changed. I lost over 15 pounds and almost 12". I made friends with some of the most inspirational and fun people. Most significantly, I gained a level of confidence, inner strength, and self-respect that could rival Oprah’s.
Now every time I show up at CrossFit Elevation I know it's going to hurt, it's going to be hard, and I will LOVE it. Thanks to everyone, especially Laura Glen, the coaches, and my new friends for putting up with my antics and helping me through this transformation. I’m so happy I could cry.
On the morning of my 30th birthday I woke up and took a hard look in the mirror. I was forced to accept the harsh reality that I had really let myself go. I did not recognize myself, I was overweight, out of shape and depressed. This was my unfortunate reality. Yo-yo dieting, workout programs, New Year’s resolutions, Atkins, boot camps, gym memberships, cash prize weight loss programs. I had experienced temporary results - I would shed some pounds and then regain them; and sometimes I packed on extra.
In February of 2012, my friend Veronica invited me to join CrossFit Elevation thru the 3-week (9 class) Jump Start Program. She emphasized that it was something that I had to fully commit to. She said, “Use it or lose it, don’t miss a single class.”, and I really took that advice to heart.
CrossFit Elevation gives you the opportunity to build on your successes and failures. The coaches attitudes are of encouragement and support. No one puts you down if you are not able to complete a task and it is ok if a particular exercise is too hard; you can scale it and work on building movements that will in time make you stronger. I felt inspired by the seemingly impossible physical tasks that intermediate and advance CrossFit athletes are able to pull off. They all participate in letting you know that they also once started where you are and that it is not impossible for you to achieve the same success eventually.
Since starting CrossFit I have lost a lot of fat and gained plenty of muscle. I went from a 40" waist line down to 34" and can now do three unassisted kipping pull-ups. I can run a mile without stopping and can Back Squat 365 lbs., among many other amazing markers. I always tell friends who are looking into trying out CrossFit - “Show up, do your best and don’t give up.”
I realized I was on the fast track to a place I didn’t want to go. I wasn’t really exercising and my weight loss efforts were stalled. I had a gym membership that I rarely used. It was hard to get motivated to go to a place which was large and impersonal. I started searching for something more and CrossFit popped up more and more. My initial reaction was "That’s crazy! I can’t do that.", but I was nonetheless intrigued. I looked at numerous websites for CrossFit gyms in the Denver area and made a short list of places to visit. My list sat untouched for awhile until I got brave enough to make an appointment for a visit.
When I walked into CrossFit Elevation I knew I had found the right place. They assured me that they worked with people of all ages, fitness levels and abilities and they were not kidding. All the coaches are wonderful and have been helpful, patient and encouraging. Every workout pushes you physically and mentally and provides a great sense of accomplishment. I learn new skills every week. The gym community is terrific and supportive. I actually look forward to working out! When I look back I can’t believe the progress I have made in a few short months.
So if you think you are too old, too fat, too slow or too tired to do CrossFit... you are wrong!
